Adjusting Pickup Height

Adjusting the pickup height is one of the most drastic things that you can do to change your tone. There are two ways you can adjust the pickup height. First, you can change the height of the entire pickup. This is done by turning the screws on either side of the pickup. Second, on some pickups you can adjust the individual poles of the pickups. This can only be done on pickups that have screws as part of the poles.

The closer the pickups are to the strings, the stronger the signal to your amp. When the strings are closer and the pickups have a stronger signal, they are called 'hot'. If you are getting a lot of quick feedback on one guitar relative to another, it is likely that your pickups are too close to the strings. Likewise, if the guitar tends to be quiet or seems to have a low output raising them closer to the strings could increase the signal.

01Locate the pickup adjustment screws.

02Turn them until you can determine which direction will move the pickups as you would like.

03Try it out. After you make some adjustments, try out the guitar and see if you can notice the difference.
